There are three advantages of using geothermal energy to generate electricity:

  • Clean, minimal emissions of carbon dioxide
Geothermal power plants do not have to burn fuel (coal or gas) to create energy. As a result, geothermal generation emits from zero to 10% of the CO2 emissions of a coal fired power station.
  • Reliable and run 24/7
Geothermal power plants are designed to run 24 hours a day, all year. A geothermal power plant sits right on top of its fuel source. Unlike wind or solar, geothermal can provide steady base load supplies of electricity, night and day, regardless of the weather.
  • Easy on the land
The land area required for geothermal power plants is smaller per megawatt than for most other type of power plant. Geothermal installations don't require coal mines or damming of rivers.
