Volcanic geothermal systems have high temperatures (+200oC) due to magmatic-related resources.  Examples are in:

  • The Taupo Volcanic System of New Zealand;
  • The Geysers field just north of San Francisco, California;
  • Fields in Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
  • Chile.

These volcanic geothermal areas occur close to the edges of continental plates. These have temperatures of 200oC to 350oC.

However, they only occur in proximity to active volcanic systems.  Typically, each zone is relatively small, up to 50 km2 in area.

Most of the current geothermal generation (9,000 MW) comes from volcanic related systems.
